Job Description:
Kitchen Helper supports the kitchen team by assisting with food preparation, maintaining cleanliness, organizing kitchen areas, and ensuring smooth daily kitchen operations. The role requires a strong work ethic, attention to hygiene standards, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced hospitality environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist chefs and kitchen staff with basic food preparation tasks.
- Wash, peel, cut, and prepare vegetables, fruits, and other ingredients as required.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of kitchen areas, workstations, and equipment.
- Wash and sanitize kitchen utensils, cookware, and equipment.
- Assist with receiving, storing, and organizing food supplies.
- Ensure proper handling and storage of food items according to hygiene standards.
- Support kitchen staff during busy service periods.
- Maintain cleanliness of refrigerators, storage areas, and preparation areas.
- Follow food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety procedures.
- Assist with garbage disposal and maintain cleanliness of waste areas.
- Ensure kitchen tools and equipment are available and properly arranged.
- Assist with stock rotation and follow FIFO (First In, First Out) practices.
- Support chefs with any additional tasks assigned.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Previous experience as a Kitchen Helper, Steward, Commis Assistant, or similar role is preferred.
- Experience in a hotel, restaurant, or hospitality environment will be an advantage.
- Basic knowledge of kitchen operations and food hygiene practices.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
- Good physical stamina and ability to work in a busy kitchen environment.
- Willingness to learn and develop culinary skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Good personal hygiene and a positive attitude.
- Basic English communication skills; Sinhala/Tamil language skills will be an advantage.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of food safety standards and kitchen sanitation procedures.
- Experience supporting professional chefs in a hotel or restaurant environment.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure during peak service periods.
- Strong teamwork and reliability.
- Interest in developing a career within the culinary department.
